What is a drawworks?

In a drilling rig, the “drawworks” refers to the hoisting mechanism that controls the movement of the drill string up and down the wellbore by reeling in and out a large wire rope called the “drilling line” – essentially acting like a powerful winch on the rig floor that allows for controlled lifting and lowering of the drill pipe during drilling operations.
